Print[Ferro-Alloys.com] Crude steel production in Japan in January-June was almost unchanged from a year before at 54.06 million tons, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation said Thursday.
January-March output fell amid sluggish exports stemming from the yen's appreciation, but April-June output rose as the year-before output was down after the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
In June, crude steel output rose for the fourth straight month to 9.19 million tons, up 3.5 percent from a year before. Output from blast furnaces increased for the third consecutive month to 6.95 million tons, up 2 percent.
Output from electric furnaces grew 8.7 percent to 2.24 million tons, up for the 12th consecutive month. The increase was mainly driven by brisk demand from the construction industry in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
