According to Kyodo News, Korea has appealed to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for Japan’s anti-dumping duties on stainless steel, which has complicated the trade dispute between Japan and South Korea. 

In November 2020, the World Trade Organization issued a ruling in favour of Japan in response to a complaint by Japan that it believed South Korea was unfair in its anti-dumping duties on Japanese-made stainless steel and recommended that South Korea immediately lift the tax. Korea filed an appeal against the ruling on the 22nd, according to a meeting of the WTO dispute settlement body (DSB) held on the 25th.

The first-instance dispute-handling committee (the panel) issued a report In November 2020, stating that “there is no reasonable and appropriate reason to substantiate” south Korea’s claim that “such as the removal of tax measures, domestic be damaged again” claims. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry believes that “Japanese stainless steel prices are high, not with the core of general-purpose products of Korean stainless steel competition,” the Japanese side claim is basically recognized.  

According to the report, if Korea disagrees with the ruling, it can appeal to the appellate body equivalent to the final appeal within 60 days.  

At that time, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan said that “Korea is expected to comply with the judgment and recommendations of the expert group report and immediately lift the tax measures”.
